I’m off to Japan for ten days for my day job. If you are passionate about food and eating, you need to find a way to get to Tokyo and Osaka. Almost nobody takes food more seriously than the Japanese. Of course you really can spend a fortune - $100 melons and $500 sushi is not urban legend. I’ve had both and it is extraordinary. But you can eat for cheap too. For $5 you can get a meal that beats any American chain.
I’ll be posting all week about the remarkable world of Japanese eating.

I get to Japan (Nagano Prefecture and Tokyo) on business for a week to ten days once a year and I love the food there…
Sushi is an obvious favorite but I also love the rice bowls, and nothing better for lunch than Kazu Don (Pork Cutlet over Rice with a Japanese BBQ sauce)
Looking forward to hearing about your adventure…

I lived in Japan for three years in the Nineties (1991-1993) and really enjoyed my time there. The food was awesome, even though I didn’t eat Sushi at the time.
I envy you making the trip (and Rob every time he goes) because it was one of the nicest countries I’ve visited…Pakistan sucks, but that’s another story.
Have a good time.

Melon - the SQUARE shaped water melon!
Japan - Things were s expensive when I visited there in mid-1980’s.
Affluenza - Japanese business card printed with real gold in 1980’s. Each oen was worth A$60 back then. So it’s worth a few times more by now.
