It’s early April and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom in Tokyo - and that means it is time for Hanami - the Cherry Blossom Festival. And that means street food - one of the best foods generally on the planet. As we go through the months, we’ll discuss why street food is so good to eat, so good for your wallet, and how you can make your own street food at home. In the mean time, I’ve provided a few photos of my brief visit with Hanami this year.
This is a typical “food court” set up in the middle of Ueno Park

It doesn’t get any better than meat on a stick, a favorite around the world. But here, “pig just means it came from a pig – not that it is pork flesh…

Fried noodles at their best.

Ah, grilled squid.

Fried and steamed tofu in many shapes and flavors.

Fish on a stick – sort of like meat on a stick – with fins.
Much better than you might imagine.

Corn on the cob cooked very simple – butter, salt, open flame.

Remarkable stuff and you can do this for almost nothing. We’ll discuss what works best in the coming weeks.
Until my next post.

Wish I was there. Great photos.
I can almost smell the meat on a stick. These people take food very serious and can create some wonderful meals.
I must say, I’ve never had fish on a stick.

Christian, Great photos, but you should reduce the size of them significantly before posting to a more manageable web size.. these take forever to load on many connections…

Hello Rob - Your right about the size. It was 2 AM and extreme jet lag took over - good enough it was. I struggled jsut to get photos up for the first time.
Thanks for your great feedback.
Wow! I can smell it from here!!!
Beautiful photos. It seems that you’re having a great time out there!

Christian,
Great photos!

I like the way you say it
I now shy away from pork since I know that it’s too much like human flesh. Once you consume it, it mixes with your own too much …..

Great Photos. I’m highly impressed you posted them up considering your travel and work schedule. I’m a meat and potatos guy but i do fish on a stick on a open fire when i’m camping. not much different i guess.

Great photos. They are very large files and drag down my connection. Might want to consider Adobe Photoshop Elements
to make more “web friendly”.
Looks like your having a great time though.

Yup, I’m with Steve. Same stuff happened to me and I have GOOD connection.
Indeed, I have a Japanese friend. She sends me beautiful cards from this time of year.
I understand it is also a very sweet romantic festival for couples as well. With great reserve and decorum of course.
Wonderful photos.

I’d never heard of Hanami but I like the sound of it! Unknowingly we’re having our own Hanami festival in our garden at the moment. We also have some fine magnolia trees that deserve a festival of their own!
I agree with Rob about the image sizes - it took an eternity for your blog to download (of course, I mean an eternity in hasty internet-land!)

Makes me hungry just looking at the photos. This sounds similar to something like a “Taste of Chicago”. Is that right?
