Most home cooks have had grown the occasional herb in the kitchen window sill or in the back yard. Few realize that over sixty varieties of citrus can readily be grown at home regardless of your location. Lemons and limes in particular are critical to so many recipes, and it’s nearly impossible to get a decent supply year round. Imagine picking fresh fruit whenever needed. Dwarf citrus trees are easily kept indoors during the colder months and transferred outside in the summer - or kept inside year round. Time from flowers to ripe fruit is several months so consider getting started now for next year. Four Winds Growers is where I buy mine. A great way to engage your kids and provide a year round supply of incredible citrus. For only forty bucks, now that you know, what’s your excuse?

I would never have thought about growing citrus inside my home.
I live in Las Vegas. Desert. Um…. really, here, too?

Dwarf trees, lemon and lime for cocktail hour and oranges for juice, are fantastic. The best part is that you can plant them in pots and take them when you move.
We should all grow as much of our own food as we can.

Wow, that would be great!
Since UV does not penetrate glass, I thought it’s hard to get decent nutritious herbs if grow them at the window sill.

Christian,
It’s ironic you write about growing citrus trees today. After seeing some really heavily laden orange and lemon trees in our neighborhood, the girls and I were recently talking about planting some trees of our own. They obviously do very well in our climate.
I am curious about the dwarf trees - I always assumed they were more for show than for eating. Is the fruit sweet like that of larger trees? I am assuming from your post that you can use them for cooking purposes.
Interesting post - as usual!

Great suggestion! I had never thought about growing warm weather fruits inside. My wife has been talking about growing a garden, so this will be good information for me to share with her.

I’m planning a garden, an itty bitty one. Definitely going to add a pot of dwarf citrus, or two. Meyer lemon? Key lime? mmmmmm
