Dieting. Diet. I don’t know the word origins that give these two words such very different meanings. But diets and dieting we should get clear on before moving to the main event. My mission in for this particular site is to illustrate the means – tools, techniques, recipes, restaurants – whatever – to eat the best you possibly can for the lowest reasonable cost. In my case, best = maximum culinary pleasure. Healthy to me, implies a mental as well as physical contribution. Diet and dieting is your call. This is not a weight loss program.
At the end of the day, it comes down to this – if you are gaining weight, you are taking in more than you are burning. Something needs to be adjusted. Conventional wisdom suggests special foods as the solution (generally some combination of low fat, low sugar, low starch, high fiber, vegetarian or the like). Implied in this approach, is keep the bulk the same. Few people ever suggest - just eat less. There is even a product on the market, often seen on late night cable TV, a fibrous substance that swells in your stomach after you eat it, in order to *feel* full. Surgical procedures are designed to impart the same sensation of fullness.
Here we are going to cater to a different approach – eat great food, slow down, and savor the meal and the company of those around you. Butter, fat, eggs and much worse will figure far more than vegetarian anything. Many cultures thrive on this sort of thing. My only criteria are extraordinary food and a fabulous experience for reasonable time and money resources. Personal responsibility comes into play. Balance the rest of your life through physical activity, portion control and elimination of hollow calories from the likes of snack food and soft drinks or whatever is your poison. Habits can change. Allow the joy of good food and good company to fill its place.

I got it. Eat less move more and enjoy the meal and the peolpe you share it with.
Good.

My wife Dixie and I went to a Tapas place last Friday night, very small plates with three or four “bites” on each. But full of flavor and very satisfying…
Over 90 minutes, we shared four or five of these small plates and we were very satisfied…
Good advice.

I’m with you on this one. For most of my life I would try different diets - Pritikin, Fit For Life, Sugarbusters, etc., each one promising amazing improvements in my health, looks or performance. Now I simply concentrate on moderation and enjoyment, because eating should be all about pleasure and fellowship.
Somehow we have lost that.

Great post - After decades of struggling with this whole issue of eating - vs - dieting, I really think you have the right approach when you say:
“Here we are going to cater to a different approach – eat great food, slow down, and savor the meal and the company of those around you. Butter, fat, eggs and much worse will figure far more than vegetarian anything. Many cultures thrive on this sort of thing. My only criteria are extraordinary food and a fabulous experience for reasonable time and money resources. Personal responsibility comes into play.”
By the way, I’ve tried commenting on your posts the last 2 days and I keep getting an Error 404 message - do you know what that might mean?
Love your posts! Great “food for thought~!”

Important to remember that it takes 20 minutes for our brain to register that we’re full. So that i why we need to stop eating at least a bit BEFORE we feel full.
If we chew at least 30 times for each mouthful of food, it also helps digestion and boostup enjoyment more too.

Love this topic. I have been 115-122lbs for my entire adult life excluding pregnancy. It is all about eating healthy and staying active. I don’t go to a gym or workout hardly at all anymore, but I must go up and down the stairs 25 times a day putting away laundry etc. I will admit that I happily eat butter, eggs and sugar. I don’t like anything made of chemicals to tastle like something natural. I just believe in “everything in moderation.”

Christian, That post is great advice. I have never dieted in my life and always wondered why so many people do. Your point that a balanced life and eating the right foods is the solution is so true. Mark

The loss of the experience is a major part of the problem….. seems like an attractive idea-slow down, enjoy, savor enhance the experience. of simply a meal.

Great post!
Its funny but even mentioning the word diet creates feelings of loss and restriction…if you have everything in moderation and keep your body moving at least 30 minutes a day and take in less calories than you expend your on your way!
And when you talk about great food look at the french and italian cultures which revolve around the principles you just described in this post!!
