In the Beginning

One of my passions is the art of eating.  Increasingly, food and the art of eating has been lost in our society. It is a fundamental human need but rarely gets any real thought.

The obvious downside to poor eating are well known - obessity, diabetes, heart disease and the list goes on.  The cost of eating poorly can also carry a high financial price as well. And then there is the issue of issue of food contamination.  Even the best restaurants - and I mean even five star restaurants - struggle to get through the health inspections. Don’t even think about going in the back room of a national chain.

However, the cost of outsourcing food preparation can be much greater than poor health.  Cooking and eating, until relatively recently, was a communal activity that brought together family and tribal members (in many far reaches of the world it still does) in a way that no restaurant, no matter how ”homey” or friendly wait staff, could ever duplicate.

Done right, sharing the preparation and consumption of a meal can also be one of the most sensual activities around. More on that later.

I claim that no matter how busy you are, no matter how overscheduled your kids, no matter how demanding your career, you can orders of magnitude better (most people don’t even know what good food is any more), with little time invested, at far lower cost than you might imagine - and connect with friends and family in a way that now seems lost.

Even if you are not sure which end of a knife to hold, in just a few hours you can have the satisfaction of preparing with your own hands the best meal you’ve ever had.
